Muscle soreness after exercise is also known as slow muscle soreness or DOMS. This indicates that you have damaged your muscle tissue, as defined by the American College of Sports Medicine. When a minor bump or tear occurs, our body begins to repair itself, causing inflammation at the site of injury. Explained by Dr. Shawn Arent, Professor and Head of the Department of Exercise Science and Head of the Department of Sports Science at the University of South Carolina, Columbia.
Dr. Arent explains that fluid builds up in the muscles, putting extra pressure on the affected area, leading to a feeling of tightness and pain that usually begins 12 to 24 hours after your workout.
While you create minor injuries each time, certain types of workouts are notorious for creating higher levels of damage and pain. Especially if you are new to exercises or those that intense than usual or sports that are different from the sports you used play, it will cause more bumps and pain than other types of exercise.
